The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach will sign a 10-year contract, the longest deal in NFL history, according to ESPN
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach and Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden will become the next head coach of the Raiders, according to multiple sources. ESPN is reporting Gruden will get a 10-year contract, the longest deal in NFL history, and likely worth $100 million. The Raiders have called a news conference for Tuesday to make the announcement.
Gruden is 95-81 in 11 years as an NFL head coach and won a Super Bowl with the Bucs in 2002. Gruden coached the Raiders prior to his head coaching job with the Bucs. Before the 2001-02 season, the Tampa Bay team wanted Gruden as its head coach, but he was still under contract with the Raiders so the Bucs traded for him. The Bucs gave the Raiders their 1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2002, a 1st round pick in 2003 and a 2nd round pick in 2004, plus cash.
Gruden coached the Raiders for four seasons from 1998–2001. His last game with Oakland was the infamous "Tuck Rule" game during the 2002 playoffs. The Raiders finished the year 6–10 this season after reaching the playoffs in 2016.
Gruden, who lives in Tampa, has worked at ESPN since 2009. His last broadcast for ESPN will be this weekend's wild card game between the Titans and Bills.
The Raiders are expected to move to Las Vegas for the 2020 season, though the move could take place a year earlier.
