facebook has introduced an improvement to its social media platform that aims at curbing the outspread of fake news. Facebook will now ban advertising of any page that is actively and repeatedly involved in sharing the false news.
facebook's blog post read, "This update will help to reduce the distribution of false news which will keep Pages that spread false news from making money. We've found instances of Pages using Facebook ads to build their audiences in order to distribute false news more broadly. Now, if a Page repeatedly shares stories that have been marked as false by third-party fact-checkers, they will no longer be able to buy ads on Facebook." However, it also mentioned that if such pages stop sharing false news they may be illegible again to use the advertisement service. Facebook uses third party organizations for checking facts mentioned in news and stories. False news are then flagged and filtered. Facebook has been working on plans to out do the circulation of fake news on its platform since 2016 US presidential election. Facebook now monitors accounts that are actively participating in spreading fake news. It has also published print ads in the UK that help users identify fake news. It was also mentioned in the blog post that Facebook will be working on three key areas which include,
Disrupting the economic incentives to create false news;
Building new products to curb the spread of false news; and
Helping people make more informed decisions when they encounter false news.
